A controversial sculpture meant to encourage peace has officially been unveiled at Honolulu Community College.

The "non-violence" sculpture depicts a revolver with a knotted barrel rendering it useless.

Replicas have been installed all over world, including the United Nations Plaza.

Several groups brought the sculpture to Hawaii, but some wondered whether it belonged on a college campus.

"Clearly this is a piece of art with a message," said Honolulu Community College Chancellor Mike Rota.

"As a vibrant institution of higher education, I believe it is one of our roles to promote opportunities for heated debate, healthy debate, and discussion."

The sculpture was created by Carl Reutersward after the murder of his friend John Lennon, 30 years ago today.

This has no place in a public collage.
