Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann says he will not accept any funds from a gubernatorial campaign event held this week in Pittsburgh tied to a major rail consultant.

Suggested donations ranged from $500 to $5,000, but the mayor says his only benefit from it will have been as meet-and-greet with friends and NLF players in attendance.

Hannemann took a brief leave from a rail-related Washington visit to appear at a campaign fundraiser held in Pittsburgh, with the RSVP number to transit consultant and former Bombardier official Paul Overby.

The mayor’s city schedule cannot list campaign-related activities, and his local campaign managers say they were not aware of it. The side trip was not taken at city expense; the flight between Washington and Pittsburgh was paid for by the Hannemann campaign committee.

The state-required notice of this event is not yet posted on the Campaign Spending Commission's website, though the mayor says the notice was filed within the past couple of days.

Hannemann spoke with KHON2 today from the Oklahoma: “With respect to event in Pittsburgh, in my view although it was a fundraiser, I saw it more of a meet-and-greet, to be able to touch base with folks who have known me since college, and with the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of my favorite teams. No donations collected that evening, and I’m not coming back to Honolulu with contributions, nor will I accept any contributions from that fundraiser."

According to state law, notices of intent to hold fundraisers must be filed with the Campaign Spending Commission prior to the date of any function in which the suggested contribution exceeds $25 dollars, even if the fundraiser is held out of state.

Mainland fundraising appears to be a big source of campaign cash this election season. The public record shows a litany of mainland fundraising events held by all leading candidates for governor, such as an up-to-$6,000-per-head event for Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona in April in Los Alto, California, or an up-to-$1,000-per-head event for then-Congressman Neil Abercrombie in San Francisco last November.

The "consultant" is a lobbyist who works with Bombardier, and was most probably paid by them to organize the fundraiser. And Pittsburgh is the headquarters for Bombardier's transit group that is bidding this project. Would it not be a violation if Bombardier is funneling money to the Mayor the same week they submit a bid for the rail system (bid was June 7). Is the fix in? Why are they not being kicked out of the bid?

If he hadn't got caught, he'd be keeping these funds. This sleazy guy only made two promises to get elected to his current stepping stone; fix the roads and sewers. Oh, there's been some superficial work (right after he cried his way into the Mayor’s office and then again in these last few pre-election months) but nothing serious. Just be sure to thank him next time the sewage overflows or you chip a tooth bouncing over these fine roads. However, he is going to build a heavy rail that no one asked for and very few will actually use. It'll take 20 years and billions more than the current 5.6 billion to build a 20 mile long 80 foot high "Monument to Mufi." Maybe we can have his life story painted as a mural down the length of it! Of course I'm sure there's no financial link between the train's consultants, designers, and builders and the soon to be former Mayor's coffers??? And look at the bright side, since he's worked so hard at moving and hiding the homeless (instead of actually addressing the issue), he could put them all up in the shade of that magnificent structure, and call it “The Hannemann House.” Plus, don't forget to thank him for the recycling program. Initiated by Mayor Harris, put on hold for 3+ years, then the “Mufster” pulls all those blue and green containers out of storage and takes credit for being such a visionary - what a great and selfless individual! Just say “No” - Let’s not let him pad his resume anymore while using this great city and state as a stepping stone to his own overly inflated sense of importance. Vote for anyone else.
