Nearly four dozen Honolulu fire fighters beat back the flames of a brush fire this afternoon in Waipio.

The brush fire began at 11:30 a.m. at an open field behind Central Oahu Regional Park.

The flames came within a few hundred yards of some town homes on Paiwa Street, but the structures were never really threatened.

The fire did provide quite a show to park goers who gathered by the baseball fields to watch firefighters battle the flames.

A maintenance worker at the park saw what was happening and called 911.

"We seen the smoke and then we came over here and then I don't know by the time we got here the thing went spread cause the wind was blowing like up ah, so that's like pretty much what happened,” said Kalani Wright.

Because of the wind direction, firefighters set a back fire to help bring the blaze under control.

The fire consumed about 25 acres of brush and although fireworks went on sale Monday, investigators say it will be nearly impossible to determine what started this blaze.

On a side note, state law enforcement officers pulled several marijuana plants from the field that burned today about a month ago.
