Economists hope the worst is over for Hawaii's housing slowdown.

Real estate firm Distinctive Homes Hawaii held a mid-year update and discussion Wednesday afternoon.

Economist Paul Brewbaker says low interest rates are helping the housing market continue a slow recovery.

"At some point rates will probably begin to rise again, so the window of opportunity is finite. It may only last for another year or so," said economist Paul Brewbaker.

Brewbaker says most of Hawaii's economic indicators are improving right now, but Oahu is still recovering from the slowdown faster than the neighbor islands, and the leading economic indicator for local families' take-home pay has not improved.

This may not actually fit here but, maybe partially. If the housing market is slow, why do the (big) land-owners seem so intenton housing development that are priced out of reach of most locals? Why not build some affordable homes coupled with renewable/self-sustained power production 'plants' to get back on their investments in two ways? The homes may be minimal profit but, the energy production can be a very long-term return-on-investments. Selling electrical power within their own development might work over the long haul. Large solar arrays plus some wind-generators(no need be large types)may supply enough power for the homes. and catch rain run-off in large catchments to ease using city drinking water for irrigation. Electric pumps can be self-powered with solar/wind generators+high-cap. batteries. Too much buildup with 'investor/speculator' buying seems the rule of thumb these days; that gotta change.
