A Maui county building was evacuated Friday. Officials say a strong smell of propane gas prompted it.

It happened around 8:45 a.m. at the Maui County Service Center inside Maui Mall. The building houses the Division of Motor Vehicles, Licensing and Real Property Tax offices.

About 50 employees were evacuated. Firefighters responded and determined there was no threat. Officials suspect the smell came from a nearby gas company.

Everyone was allowed to go back into the building by 10 a.m. No one was transported to a hospital. No stores in the mall were affected.
