An unsolved murder has stumped Honolulu police for nearly a decade. In 2002 John Reverio was found dead at Keaau Beach Park, police still do not have any suspects in the case. Sharon Reverio's life and especially the month of May will never be the same.
“We brought him into this world and you know and was hoping he'd still be here,” said John’s mother Sharon Reverio.
She last saw her son John the day before Mother's Day and then two days after her birthday she found out he was dead.
“I said oh no, that can’t be,” said Reverio.
“On May 14th 2002 at about 649pm a male walking along the beach located a burnt body in the sand, police located the body and determined it had been there for several days,” said CrimeStoppers Sgt. Kim Buffett.
Using a thumb print police managed to identify the badly burned body as 23 year-old John Reverio, to this day no one has been arrested in connection with the homicide and detectives are still looking for leads.
"I mean you know the word closure is so um vague to me sometimes, because losing a child you do have you know some relief that the person or persons who have done this to your child you know will be punished for it,” she said.
She says each day is a struggle and is reminded why people have stopped asking about her son's death.
“Til today we don't know how he passed away we weren't able to even view his body,” she said.
John Reverio was homeless at the time of his murder. His mother says he John was living on the beach in Makaha because of his addiction to drugs. But says he was a good and loving son, who did well with arts and crafts.
“He would take his shirt of his back to help someone in need, if he'd find a wallet he'd return it.”
Sharon suspect’s drugs played a part in his death, police say he was last seen at a party the night he was believed to be murdered.
“Nobody deserves to have their life taken by another human being. I don't know how they can sleep at night and um you know god have mercy on their souls."
