Thanks to many of you, Christmas will be a lot brighter for less fortunate families across the state. Lokahi Day was held yesterday with collection sites set up on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island.
Volunteers and donors have their reasons for helping with the Lokahi Giving Project.
For Desi McKenzie, it's because she was a recipient ten years ago.
"It taught me about the spirit of giving and how important it is to look beyond your own family," said Desi.
Desi owns Hawaii Youth Chorus and the group performed at the Ala Moana Lokahi Drive on Saturday, as it's done for the past nine years.
Many shoppers took some time out of their holiday shopping to stop by and spread some cheer. Not only at Ala Moana Center, but also at Windward Mall and at two locations on Maui.
Collection sites were set up at Lahaina Cannery and at Queen Kaahumanu Center.
"I think from last year to this year as far as donations are concerned its been doubled."
On the Big Island, collection sites were set up at Waimea Center and Prince Kuhio Plaza.
Paradise Auction in Hilo donated more than six thousand dollars, which it raised through an auction on Friday.
And the Gonzales family donated new toys.
"We're just doing our part," said Brandon Gonzales, a Lokahi donor.
The most requested items are household goods like bedding, towels and toiletries.
Educational toys and gift cards are also high on wish lists.
