Each year during our Lokahi Giving drive many are surprised to hear requests for basic necessities like laundry detergent, shampoo, and toilet paper, but sometimes it's the small things that can make all the difference.
They quickly work to unload a truck full of things and the mom of the family on the receiving end of this generosity is overwhelmed.
"This is a blessing in disguise and I really didn't expect what I see here. And thank you very, very much," said Chanel.
Chanel works part-time, her husband full-time and while all the wrapped gifts for her three daughters are a thrill, it's the basics.
"I needed laundry baskets forevers, and I got two new laundry baskets, and it's the simple things that touches my heart. It's the simple ones," said Chanel.
Good folks from DHI Mortgage and D.R. Horton with some help from their families play Santa on this day.
"What I love about the Lokahi project is it's for the entire family. It's not just for kid, it's not just about toys. But it's about the entire family," said Suzie Bass of DHI Mortgage and D.R. Horton.
"Seeing their reaction is really nice. It's just nice to give something to someone else, and I mean look at all the stuff we got for them. I like being able to give them to someone else and not just get things for myself," said Lindsey Bass, Suzie's daughter.
Lindsey spent her 18th birthday helping to deliver the gifts.
The family opens a few of the gifts. The girls are thrilled to have a princess bed and mattress to sleep on, appreciative of all they're given.
"And I appreciate the hard work that everyone did for us. And not even knowing who we are and just giving that extra time to do a little shopping for my family it really makes a great difference," Chanel said.
And thanks to the Gold Guys at Ward Center, who donated a $50 Foodland gift certificate to this family and several of our Lokahi families.
