Life doesn't always turn out the way you plan. Imagine working your whole life, raising your children … and just when you think you can take it easy ... Your life takes a turn. That's what happened to today's Lokahi family.
Grandma is 71. Grandpa is 63. For the past 6 years, they've been raising their three granddaughters, ages 11, 12 and 15. Mom and dad have been in and out of prison.
Grandpa is the sole breadwinner …working fulltime six days a week to support this family of five. They live in a three-bedroom home with two other relatives.
Under grandma's and grandpa's care, the girls have thrived. A caseworker says: "Grandma makes every effort to lead them on the right path ... "
They volunteer together at their church, participate in youth groups and play sports.
You can help make the holidays a little brighter for this family...
The 15 and 12 year old girls could use school clothes. The 12 year old would also be thrilled to receive some books. The 11 year old is the "girly girl" of the bunch. She loves anything shiny and bright .. And colorful socks!
It took some coaxing but grandpa eventually said he could use some work clothes. Grandma would appreciate a cookbook.
The two other family members living in the home could use bus passes to get to and from work and work clothes. The family could also us toilet paper and soap.
With Christmas around the corner this family would also love a nice holiday meal to share together.
Let's make this Christmas a happy one for this family in need. In the spirit of Lokahi, Trini Kaopuiki, KHON2 News.
