Aloha. Mom and dad are teenage parents. Statistics tell us that they won't stay together, that they will lack the necessary parenting skills, and that they won't finish high school. Well so far, today's Lokahi family is beating the odds. And it hasn't been easy for this young couple.
Their baby is considered a miracle child. She was born premature at just 24 weeks. She spent the first months of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kapiolani Hospital.
She had problems with her gastrointestinal system, kidneys and liver. The family's caseworker says that at six months old, the baby looked more like a three month old and functioned like a one month old.
Now, however, at 17 months, the toddler is walking by herself, is happy, healthy and full of energy.
The caseworker credits mom and dad saying they've been excellent parents. They remain a united team and attend every therapy session and doctor's appointment.
The caseworker says, "They are responsible, caring, and are determined to give their daughter the best life."
Dad has a full-time job. Mom just got her GED and plans to go to college.
If you'd like to help this family continue to beat the odds, here is their wishlist.
Mom is requesting cleaning supplies for their home and work clothes. Dad would be thrilled with a video camera to capture their baby's milestones. Diapers or a tricycle would also be appreciated.
