Today's Lokahi family consist of a working mom and dad … and their 2 year old autistic daughter. Their daughter just started preschool and mom says she has made wonderful developmental gains. Her speech, cognitive and social skills have improved. Due to their financial hardship, mom and dad are forced to be creative. The preschool their daughter attends prefers the children to wear pull-ups instead of diapers. … but because pull-ups are expensive, dad sews the sides of the diapers turning it into a pull up. They also go to Costco and use the cardboard boxes there as a desk for their little girl. The family caseworker says she was so surprised to see the box taped and made into a desk. This is what's on this family's wish list: For the 2-year old: diapers, board books and Disney movies. A booster seat with tray would also be useful so this child would have a place to sit and eat her meals. Mom and dad don't ask anything for themselves … however, a caseworker says a gift card to Longs or Star Market would help this family buy what they need. To help this family or others like this one, drop off an unwrapped gift, check or cash donation at branches of central pacific bank statewide. Starbucks is also accepting new toys and books for keiki . ..or you can drop off donations at Hawaii self storage. on Maui, our drop off sites are at Azeka Shopping Center and A-American Self Storage.
