A week from Friday, the John A. Burns School of Medicine will hold its annual health fair.
It's a great opportunity to learn how to take better care of yourself.
Medical students at the John A. Burns school of medicine have been performing this outreach health fair for several years.
"Usually we get more toward the elderly population but we have something for everyone - women and children and we have Costco hearing aid center coming and we have project vision Hawaii coming so we'll be taking pictures of retinas. There will be Queen's Medical center doing some promotional things for breast cancer awareness," said JABSOM student Kellie Kitamura.
The community health fair will be held at the medical school in Kakaako from noon until three on Friday, January sixth - a fitting beginning to the new year.
"How to start your new year right because everyone's new year's resolution is to be more healthy. What better way than to start at a health fair. It's more along the lines of giving people information - heads up on how you would screen yourself for breast cancer," Kitamura said.
The community health fair will include all kinds of health screenings, food and entertainment. Kellie is following what she says is her calling.
"I think every med student wants to help people do well - I have a lot of personal experience knowing how much doctors are meaningful to people and what they can do and I want to give back to my patients when I become a doctor," she says.
And she is quick to admit, the health fair is just as important for the students as it is for the community.
"I think this is the community that we'll be serving once we get out of med school and residency, so I think the earlier that we get exposure to reaching out and getting to know the community the better. We're kind of a people job, so it's good that we get the exposure early," she says.
The community health fair is January 6 at the John A Burns Medical School from noon until three. And it's FREE!
