The Queen’s Medical Center’s Cancer Center has been granted $150,000 over two years by the Hawaii Community Foundation for its Smoking Intervention Guided Healing (SIGH) project. Funds for this award are made possible through the Hawaii Tobacco Prevention & Control Trust Fund.

QMC provides over 40 percent of the cancer care in Hawaii.

Patients diagnosed with cancer related to smoking are motivated and interested in cessation programs.

QMC is one of eight trust fund grant recipients to receive funding to help Hawaii residents quit tobacco.

The Hawaii Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund was created by landmark legislation (Act 304, SLH 1999), devoting a significant portion of Hawaii’s tobacco Master Settlement Agreement payment to create and maintain a Hawaii free of tobacco use, addiction, and exposure to secondhand smoke.

People who never became addicted to cigarettes are so quick to judge....it is not as easy at it might appear. Addiction to cigarettes is compared to addiction to heroin and do you think heroin addicts can just "put it down and walk away?"...THEY ONLY WISH!!! The thin about a cigarette is it becomes your best friend, you confidant, you shoulder to cry on your celebratory high five. and the need for it surpasses the physical.....my only question is why such a small amount of money while the tobacco companies continue to rake in the huge bucks ...i mean HUGE....this seems like a drop in the bucket...i'm glad Queens got something but they should have gotten a whole lot more!! Queens Medical Center is awesome and I'm sure they will stretch that and use every penny to its fullest!!!!
