State health officials are reminding parents to get young children vaccinated for the H1N1 swine flu virus, after a five-year-old child from Samoa died this week in Honolulu. The child had been being treated for about a month at Kapiolani hospital for complications of the swine flu.
The state is making a push to get more vaccination doses to pediatricians.
"We're focusing a lot of efforts toward those who cater to the 3-5 year old age group, so a lot of those providers will also start to see vaccine coming to them,” said Dr. Sarah Park.
The state said priority will be given to doctors who have been most responsive in reporting back to the state about doses already given out.
The state is also urging college-age students to get vaccinated, saying there are not many 19-to-24-year-olds who have sought the immunization yet.
