What does this, Crossfit, have to do with military service...
When crossfit first started, it was a strong training influence over soldiers. so, they had a large military population jumping on the crossfit workouts to get them in shape for their job," says Kimo Kockelman, Hardass Fitness Crossfit Hawaii.
And that connection remains with news of a unique fundraiser spreading quickly.
It's called 31 heroes...a universal workout that crossfitters across the world will do on September 3rd.
"We're talking talking tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, maybe even into the millions of people participating, doing the same workout, fundraiser to benefit the families of those soldiers," says Kockelman.
Participants pay 31 dollars to sign up...the money will go to Navy seal foundation, to help the naval special warfare community and their families.
Crossfit affiliates across the country, across the world are jumping on board.
"I knew we had to get in on the workout. I mean hero workouts are a big part of Crossfit, and it's a big way of having regular people, civilians and military feel like they're part of what's going on," says Bryant Powers, Crossfit Oahu.
This most deadly tragedy since the war in Afghanistan started hit especially close to home...Maui native Kraig Vickers was killed in the crash.
"I have two brother-in-laws that returned a few days ago from Afghanistan who knew those people directly. So for me there was no doubt, we're going to do this workout," says Kockelman.
Thirty soldiers killed, so why is the workout called Thirty-one heroes?
There was also a military service dog killed in that crash...so 31 heroes will be honored.
