Governor Lingle is once again supporting the Akaka Bill and wants U.S. Senators to pass it into law.Today, the governor sent a letter to senators sharing her position.
This comes less than four months after a much different letter was sent to them, stating she was withdrawing her support after the measure was amended last year.
The governor says she and Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka reached an agreement that addressed her concerns.
She said, “I believe that the Akaka Bill is constitutional, is good public policy, is (in its to-be-amended form) supported by Hawaii's citizens, is consistent with the Congress's approach to recognition of the other native peoples of America, and is just and fair."
She encouraged lawmakers to bring the bill to a vote in the senate.
