Summertime is the travel season but there is always the threat of disease. There are some basic ways to help yourself stay healthy.
It should be a fun time - traveling to destinations, having adventures. But none of that is fun if you are sick.
"It's been a small world for a long time now so we see a lot of people getting together in small or confined areas and this contributes to disease spreading from person to person." said John Halloran with Infection Control.
Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person, which is why we often see world travelers wearing a form of surgical mask.
"Asia is ahead of us. We see people wearing a lot of masks when they're traveling. This is probably not a very bad idea.If it doesn't prevent the direct transmission, it prevents you from touching your mouth or your nose." said Halloran.
Folks from here in the islands are often most comfortable walking barefoot - especially on the plane. But Halloran warns against that.
"I would want to wear something on my feet just because you don't know what you're stepping on especially if you're on the way to the bathroom and there's stuff all over the bathroom floor and when you're sitting in that seat, your feet are much closer to your hands." said Halloran.
Halloran's final words of advice make sense whether you are traveling or staying at home.
"Getting enough sleep, getting enough food, getting a moderate amount of exercise. On an airplane, you want to make sure you wash your hands frequently. You want to get up and move around, and get your circulation going, get your sleep if you can." said Halloran.
