Childhood obesity continues to be a problem in the U.S. and especially here in Hawaii.
Number one, the experts tell us, children model their behavior on their parents. If they see the folks overindulging, they will likely accept that as the norm.
If you are having trouble deciding what to put on the dinner table, Castle Medical Center dietician Ruby Hayasaka says, “Access your web. There are lots of interesting ideas on web recipes that you can find that will meet your needs for healthy food."
Childhood obesity has been a subject of concern for some time now.
"About ten years ago, the surgeon general came out with a report telling us about how concerned, the concern for obesity in children as well as adults. In the past ten years, we saw the incidence continue to escalate,” she said.
In fact, it's estimated at least one out of three children could be described as overweight, if not obese. But there are developments that have health care specialists encouraged.
"I was really excited and happy to see all the effort and materials that went, that have been developed under Michelle Obama's "let's move" initiative and that web site has information for schools, community groups, for families and even for children to access to help you eat, make healthy choices and combat obesity,” she said.
There is also a local effort to eliminate childhood obesity.
