Beth and Shawn are ad libbing this life saving technique, CPR.  But they are both committed to an ongoing partnership between Castle Medical Center and Castle High School.

"The ultimate goal is to have as many people in our community trained for CPR and using the schools as a venue is a win-win situation.  The schools can use an evidence-based practice and standards-based education to educate the students,” said Beth Davidann.

Faculty at Castle High School also can take part in the cpr training.

It's good for all of us.

"The Heart Association has a goal to have at least 10 percent of the population trained as CPR ready people.  The more people who are ready to be prepared to save a life, the safer our community will be."

Speaking of communities, if the trend continues, the windward side will see a lot more health care workers.

"All the 9th graders through their PE classes get trained in heart savers CPR.  So they're all certified.  We also have the health services pathway there, where students who are interested in the medical field, they take one, two, three classes and they have the opportunity to be trained as a health care provider,” said Shawn Mashino of Castle High School.

That health services pathway could be just the ticket for a young person to pursue a career in the health care field.  Experts tell us it is the single area where job security is virtually guaranteed.  And such opportunities might also stem the brain drain that's been going on for decades.

"It's such an important field where the kids go out there and they provide care to other people.  Our goal is to get them excited about some kind of career and hopefully keep them here at home, you know, taking care of people."
