Democrats Neil Abercrombie and Brian Schatz spent their lunch hour in downtown Honolulu Monday and later took a V.I.P phone call from the White House.
"Good luck to you, thank you very much."
Like many athletes, politicians often speak of momentum and the importance of peaking at the right time..
"Good luck, I don't think you guys will need it."
And most of all, finishing strong.
"Thank you."
Neil Abercrombie believes he and Brian Schatz are on the right path.
"I've been in a lot of campaigns, 30 plus campaigns in my in my time and I know momentum when I feel it and I know a positive atmosphere when I experience it and that's what's going on now," said Abercrombie.
Abercrombie has had little rest since starting his run for governor nearly 10 months ago but remains hungry to serve.
"People obviously want to embrace change they sure want to embrace us. They've been so kind to us everybody shaking hands wishing us good luck saying they already voted for us it's very very uplifting," said Abercrombie. "You can tell one somebody is energized and I'm energized."
If there were any doubts about energy they were put to rest with one phone call.
"The president. Hello everybody!"
On the eve of the general election President Obama phoned home and spoke with democrats across Hawaii.
"On this election day you've got real choices and real opportunities to make positive change and the type of change you voted for when you elected me president," said President Obama during a conference call. "Hawaii democrats have a great slate of exceptional candidates and they need your support."
"I think it means a lot that on the night before the election literally the night in Washington that he's calling Hawaii, he's reconnecting definitely with his roots," said Abercrombie.
While reconnecting with a life-long friend in Abercrombie.
"He's a person of integrity who you can trust to do the right thing. His levels of public service at every level is unmatched and so he's the guy who is perfectly qualified to be governor," said President Obama.
"We feel very confident that the message of embracing change has gotten through," said Abercrombie.
Abercrombie and other democrats traveled to the Big Island Monday night for a county rally in Hilo.
