A national poll on Hawaii's Senate race shows the seat is very much up for grabs, with former Governor Linda Lingle now in the race for the Republican party.

The group Public Policy Polling surveyed 568 Hawaii voters, including 368 usual Democratic primary voters, from October 13th to 16th. The margin of error for the entire survey is between 4 and 5 percent.

The two announced Democrats, former Rep. Ed Case and current Rep. Mazie Hirono, are locked in a tight battle for the nomination.

Hirono leads with 45% to Case's 40%, but with 15% undecided.

In a hypothetical matchup, Hirono bests Lingle by six points, 48-42, but Case actually trails Lingle by two, 43-45.

"This race has become far more competitive since PPP last polled it in March," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "Linda Lingle's candidacy does give Republicans a chance for a pick up that would be devastating to Democratic hopes of holding onto the Senate."

PPP says the poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews. PPP is a Democratic polling company, but polling expert Nate Silver of the New York Times found that its surveys in 2010 actually exhibited a slight bias toward Republican candidates.

QUESTIONS:

"If the candidates for US Senate were Ed Case and Mazie Hirono, who would you vote for?" (Asked of 368 Democratic primary voters)

Ed Case 40%

Mazie Hirono 45%

Not sure 15%

"If the candidates for Senate next year were Republican Linda Lingle and Democrat Ed Case, who would you vote for?"

Linda Lingle 45%

Ed Case 43%

Undecided 12%

"If the candidates for Senate next year were Republican Linda Lingle and Democrat Mazie Hirono, who would you vote for?

Linda Lingle 42%

Mazie Hirono 48%

Undecided 10%

How can anyone support the jobs bill??? Just one sentence in the president's speech told me everything I need to know about it. When the President said that we will pay for it by making the super committee find the money to pay for it. What the, he puts out a bill without knowing how he is gonna fund it, and then he puts the whole responsibility on someone else. Come on!!!!!

A democrat would only vote in-step with Democrat leaders also. I don't think the Fed govt should pay for any States schools, including Hawaii. This is a State responsibility. I don't want my taxes to pay for Calif or Texas, etc schools. I think Republicans just have a different opinion on how to revive the economy and create jobs. When Bush was President I remember people saying the democrats wanted us to lose the war just to defeat the President, which I did not believe either. The govt need to give incentives to create jobs in the US. Less regulation is one way. This will help corporations not go offshore. So you think we should cut social security payments to seniors or increase the employees withholding taxes? I am surprised the republicans did this as this is just another tax. This is just a philosophical difference. I rather keep my own money and spend it the way I choose. Anything the govt spends I know my taxes will go up. The govt is wasteful, inefficient and politically driven.

THINK ABOUT IT: As Charles Djou did when he was our Congressman in Washington, Linda Lingle will only be able to march in-step with her Republican Leaders. CHARLES DJOU VOTED AGAINST FUNDING FOR HAWAII'S SCHOOLS WHEN HE WAS OUR CONGRESSMAN! The REPUBLICANS NO LONGER CARE ABOUT THE CITIZENS OF AMERICA, THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT CORPORATE PROFITS for CEOs AND LESS REGULATION SO CORPORATIONS CAN OFFSHORE YOUR JOBS. The Republican leadership in Washington has shown they would rather wreck our economy just to bring down our President. THE REPUBLICANS SELL YOU THIS LINE ABOUT JOB KILLING HEALTHCARE REFORM BUT GET THIS: They just passed THE INCREASE IN SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS. That may sound good, but do you know where that money is coming from? It IS PAID FOR BY AN INCREASE IN PAYROLL TAXES! How can employers create more jobs when they have to pay higher payroll taxes? The Republican congress and senate will do this but will not support the President's Job Bill which would cut payroll taxes in half! HIGHER PAYROLL TAXES MEANS LESS JOBS! Keep our Republican legislators here in Hawaii where they can help Hawaii, not in Washington where they will only be able to act as pawns for the senior Republican leadership! A Democratic congressman and senator will allow the President we elected to do the job we elected him to do for US, the citizens of Hawaii.
