As we age, it's important to pay attention to our bones and joints.
We have all heard stories about seniors falling; a simple fall can mean big problems because our bones are not as strong as they once were.
"Once we get past our twenties, our bone density starts decreasing and so keeping that bone density strong as we become older is very important," said Dr. Linda Rasmussen, an orthopedic surgeon.
There are many different factors affecting bone density, genetics plays an important part. But Dr. Rasmussen says putting on weight can also be a strain.
"Additional weight can put additional stress on the bones especially the knees, so keeping the weight under control is good, but being too thin can also contribute to the bones thinning," said Dr. Rasmussen.
In addition to paying attention to our weight, Dr. Rasmussen says a balanced diet is equally important, a diet that includes the proper amount of nutrients.
"Calcium is very, very important. Important even as a teenager to make sure you develop adequate bone density. The sodas take away any calcium that you take in. So it's very important that you get rid of the sodas in the diet, especially in the teens and then as you get older stay away from the sodas."
Finally, Dr. Rasmussen and other health specialists remind us that along with a balanced diet, exercise plays a vital role in maintaining strong bones and joints. And it doesn't have to be rigorous exercise.
"Walking, resistive type activities are very, very important. Also very important to ward off arthritis," said Dr. Rasmussen. "Resistive type exercises are very important to keep the bones strong, especially for women but men can develop thinner bones as well. Also for the joints, swimming and activities that stress the bones but not overly stress the joints are very important."
