Teenagers often suffer from acne - but skin problems don't go away as we age.
Staying active is important and we often take advantage of our beautiful Hawaii weather to get that exercise. But as we age, there are precautions that should be taken.
"Actually it's dry skin," said Dr. Emese Somogyi of Castle Medical Center. "The skin with aging becomes dry and flaky and itchy and the reason for that is because we lose oil glands and it's not only uncomfortable people start scratching often times as a result of it and it leads to infections."
Dr. Somogyi's advice - use sun tan lotion before and after exposure and drink lots of water.
"It's especially important - again years and years of sun exposure so in Hawaii we see a very high number of skin-related problems such as age spots," she says.
Our skin can indicate other problems as well.
"Different diseases of the internal organs can reflect on the skin, especially diabetics, people with poor circulation, people with kidney or liver problems can have skin problems," said Dr. Somogyi.
There may be certain skin problems that only apply to seniors.
"Also as we age, the skin becomes thinner and more prone to damage so people with age can be prone to developing bluish spots," Dr. Somogyi said.
Finally, these words of advice from the doctor.
"I think that taking care of our skin is not vanity. It's good, sound medical advice and that we are never too old to protect our skin from the sun," she said.
