On the Elderhood project tonight, seniors getting into the Christmas spirit - and enjoying fellowship at the same time.
Seniors at Makua Ali'i gather to put together Christmas decorations - specifically, Christmas wreaths that they will hang on their front doors.
Steve Santiago of the City and County Parks and Recreation department.
"The seniors are coming today to make Christmas wreaths using different types of medium. We've pretty much went through all of our yards and we've picked all the greeneries for them to use. They're going to be using different types of wreath bases and each of them they'll be able to make and use them at home for the holidays," Voice of Steve Santiago, Parks & Recreation Department.
We were curious about why the seniors enjoyed this activity.
Mary Ann O'Neill tells us her reason.
Creating and having something that you made to put on your front door." Matthews - "and being with some friends?" mary ann - "Absolutely. Absolutely. We're all here just having a good time and about the same level of creativity," says Mary Ann O-Neill, wreath maker.
Betty Tanaka teaches other classes and believes this experience can only help.
"Its Christmas and also I have a youth program with the Ikebana International and last Saturday we had a Christmas wreath making workshop and the children really appreciated it because usually once a month, I have Ikebana class and it's all formal. But this one, the last Saturday, they just went free style. They enjoyed it and when I learned it, maybe I could go back and teach them," voice of Betty Tanaka, wreath maker.
And teach them she will. More importantly, from the Parks and Recreation department, this is a chance for seniors to get together.
"They just get to hang out as friends and do this type of work and wreath-making is something we want to perpetuate with our seniors so that they can go home and do it with their grandchildren. I've actually had wreath making in our garage with my Mom and my sisters and where we get together a couple days before christmas we sit there for an evening making wreaths," says Santiago.
