Active seniors will find plenty to do and learn at the Senior Health Day Fair. One of the keynote speakers will be Lieutenant Governor James "Duke" Aiona. He wants to bring a message to our kupuna.
"But really to bring to them the essence of educating them, letting them know what resources are out there, what we in state government are trying to do to help provide more resources and help them age nicely in Hawaii,” said Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona.
The hot topic of the day is health care reform. The Lieutenant Governor is well aware of that. But he says there is one important element in any such discussion.
"A big part of it is us taking personal responsibility for our own health and that means the decisions that we make when we eat something and of course exercising and I'm seeing more and more of our seniors, our aging population - I'm one of them - that's taking better care of themselves through exercise."
Seniors will be entertained and educated, according to the Lieutenant Governor. It is called a Health Day Fair and that includes mental as well as physical health. Under that heading - avoiding scams.
"And we've enacted a couple of legislative bills in the past couple of years increasing the penalties for people that are preying upon our elderly, whether it be through their homes, whether it be through their bank accounts or whether it be just mail scams."
Aiona says kupuna here tend to be trusting.
"We want them to know what to look out for and how to be suspicious of things that come in the mail and/or phone calls so that they don't be a victim to these predators."
And if you want to arrive at the Health Fair early...
"The Windward Mall has probably one of the biggest malls that our more matured audience goes to do the mall walking."
The Senior Health Day Fair runs from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Saturday at Windward Mall
