Nutrition is important at every stage of our lives. But perhaps it becomes more important as we age.
At the Old Stadium Park, neighborhood residents gather early on a Wednesday morning to look over and perhaps purchase fresh produce.
The Hawaii Foodbank supports this effort.
"It's important because it helps to increase the amount of exposure that our farmers have with our farmers' markets. So we want to increase awareness. We also want to make sure that our seniors are getting the nutrition that they need,” said Sandee Walker of the Hawaii Foodbank.
This program has several important goals.
"The first to provide qualified seniors vouchers that they can purchase fresh, locally grown, un-processed fruits, vegetables, fresh cut herbs and honey,” said Walker.
But it doesn't stop there, this program increases awareness about local farmers and producers and there's a third goal.
"And our third goal to increase the nutritional awareness that our seniors have. When seniors have to make the decision between purchasing their medication and purchasing their food, we want to be able be a catalyst, a segue for them to be able to do both,” said Walker.
Sandee sees this open market as an opportunity for both seniors and farmers to gain strength. The orange placards on the various vendor wagons alert the seniors to the support the farmers are offering.
The Hawaii Foodbank is doing what it can to keep it local.
"And one of those is to have mostly locally grown produce available at their markets. We have some up to 90 percent of what they do provide as being locally grown. So it's definitely a great thing for our seniors to have available,” said Walker.
