Hawaii seniors and caregivers can get much needed help during an event next Tuesday.

Hawaii's senior population keeps on growing. So more and more households are in need of caregivers, and it only makes sense to count on family members. But those who take on the responsibility probably haven't had much training.

"None of us are trained to be caregivers. We do what we think we should be doing, but we don't necessarily have the skills or the knowledge, and it could be as simple as trying to lift someone or carry them or try to transport them,” said Lyn Moku of the Hawaii Family Caregiver Coalition.

There's plenty of help available but most people don't like to ask for it.

Lyn Moku of the Hawaii Family Caregiver Coalition says people tend to be very private and prefer to take on the responsibility. In most cases they have a job and already have kids to look after, so they get overwhelmed.

"You have a whole range of responsibilities. Now you have one more that's critically important, and that's becoming a caregiver. So trying to find balance in your life and not burn out is very important,” said Moku.

On Tuesday, March 29th, the 6th Annual Family Caregiver Awareness Day will be held at the State Capitol from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

More than 50 exhibitors will be there covering a wide range of services for family caregivers. Also on that day, seniors are invited to take part in the annual March for Meals Kupuna Rally. Organized by Lanakila Meals on Wheels, participants will march around the Capitol to raise awareness for senior hunger. Meals on Wheels provides hot meals for more than 800 homebound seniors on Oahu. The program also runs group dining sites for seniors who are not homebound and the purpose is to keep them that way.
