Thousands of seniors were getting their flu shots during last weekend's senior fair, the good life expo. It's a good thing they were."Seniors are the most susceptible to this virus and the season flu is always with us. It has more actual illness associated with it than any other influenza issue that we know of,” explained Dr. Rio Banner.
There is a particular reason why our kupuna should be sure to get their flu shots.
"Here in Hawaii, of course, we have extended families too so seniors are with their young children, their grandchildren so it's really important that they get their shots,” said Judy Strait-Jones.
And that's a two way street.
Seniors could give the flu to the grandchildren - or they could get the flu from the kids who could very easily contract the disease at school.
We only need one lifetime vaccination for chicken pox or measles - why a new flu shot every year?
Dr. Rio Banner says, "Because the virus itself changes a little bit each year. So there's a good bit of research that goes into identifying what's coming in next year."
There is no time to lose, according to Strait-Jones.
If you have been postponing the shot because you didn't know where to go, help is available.
"They should call their doctor, get an appointment or they can actually call 2-1-1 and 2-1-1 has lots of places to get it. They have an excellent data base and they'll find a place for you on any island. 2-1-1 is a free call,” she said.
And finally, if you are on Medicare, the shot is covered.
