Last year, hundreds gathered to hear the latest information about caregiving. Along with the primary session where a number of speakers from public and private agencies can be heard, there will also be breakout sessions.
"This year we have four breakout sessions...in the legal and financial room, we'll have a room just on health care, we'll have a room just on government programs and a room on caregiving,” said workshop coordinator, Percy Ihara
There will be any number of resources available to those attending, including this handbook published through the auspices of the University of Hawaii Elder Law program.
"Deciding who cares which is our legal handbook for caregivers, kupuna and families and this has been very popular. We're very happy with the reception in the community and we're going to make it available at the conference,” said Jim Pietsch from the U.H. Law School.
With all the controversy surrounding health care reform in America today, a number of the workshops will provide valuable insight - especially in terms of long term elder care.
"There's a lot of misinformation out in the community about certain legal aspects of planning for the future especially in the area of health care decision-making. We've heard a lot of - a lot about death panels and such so I'll talk about death panels,” said Pietsch.
Pietsch is talking with his tongue firmly implanted in his cheek.
This conference is not solely for the elderly.
Ihara said, "I would say about fifteen to twenty percent of the people attending the conference will be children of parents they're taking care of and where do you find the information? We have a number of respite support groups that will be presenting, we're going to be talking about programs for seniors and for caregivers."
Ihara is happy to point out - the price is right. "It's absolutely free. They can come and go at any time. No reservations required. Just come on down to the Ala Moana Hotel and they've done a great job."
The Aging in Place workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ala Moana Hotel
