There are many resources available for seniors, their families and caregivers.
A neighborhood workshop will provide some insight.
Percy Ihara, publisher of Generations magazine is the driving force behind the workshops.
"Our theme is Hawaii's Resources for Life and what we've been doing is taking a lot of our presenters and speakers from the magazine and doing workshops around town. So on July 16, this coming Saturday and July 30, we do a workshop to provide information to our seniors and their family members," Ihara says.
One of the experts on hand, Michael Yee of Ameriprise. He says there are common concerns among seniors. At one point, only one in four of our elders required long term care.
"Now the Department of Health says seven in ten are going to experience long term care and the mistake many people make is they think that seven in ten chances means that only if I live to 95, I'm going to be in long term care. But in reality, it could happen any time," Yee says.
Another expert - Pamela Cunningham, the head of SagePlus which provides information on medicare - - and the opportunity for change in enrollment period has changed since last since year.
"So it used to be November 15th to December 31st and now it will be October 15th to December 7th. So we have actually a shorter period for people to look at what their options are and change their plans," Cunningham says.
Moving the transition period up three weeks may create some hardships, but Cunningham says staff will be up to the challenge.
"Well, tougher but the volunteers don't have to stay up on New Year's Eve working on comparisons," she says.
Once again, there will be two Aging Confidently sessions in the near future.
"July 16th, this Saturday morning from 9 til one o'clock, we'll be at 15 Craigside in Nuuanu. We'll also give a tour of the new facility. And on July 30th, also a Saturday morning, we'll have it at Catholic Charities at the top of Keeaumoku Street," Ihara says.
