The U.S. Department of Education named three schools in Hawaii as 2011 national blue ribbon schools.

King Liholiho Elementary School, Koko Head Elementary School and Waialua Elementary School are among 300 nationwide public and private schools that earned the honor this year.

These public and private K-12 schools are being honored for their overall academic excellence or for their success in closing achievement gaps.

The national blue ribbon schools will be honored at a conference and awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 14-15.

Further information on the program and a list of the current 305 winners are listed at http://www.ed.gov/nationalblueribbonschools.
