Middle schoolers in some West side and Big Island schools will get a new Intermediate Athletics program for next year.

The program is part of the Hawaii State Department of Education's three year pilot program to start next school year. It will serve to provide extended learning opportunities, which are currently unavailable for students in complex areas of Nanakuli and Waianae, Oahu and in Kau, Keeau, and Pahoa, Big Island. These areas represent the state's lowest 5% in school performance.

Football, basketball, volleyball and soccer are all proposed sports for the pilot program, which requires students keep a 2.0 GPA to remain enrolled in it.

Schools eligible for the pilot programs:

Kau High and Pahala Elementary (Grades 7 and 8)
Keaau Middle
Nanakuli High & Intermediate
Pahoa High & Intermediate
Waianae Intermediate

Wouldn't the funds be more correctly spent on improving academic programs rather than athletics? The link to academics by making a 2.0 grade point average is tenuous at best. Hawaii public schools continually lag behind in academics. Is it any wonder why Hawaii has the largest number of private schools per capita than any other state?
