The Department of Education handed out awards today to school employees from across the state.

Nicholas Aiello, a behavioral specialist at Kahaluu Elementary school, was named the department's employee of the year.

Aiello has been a state employee for six years, and says helping children is the ultimate goal.

"What we can do to benefit our kids with whatever resources we have whether its time whether its showing a kid you care about them or doing something extra for them or their families," says Nicholas Aiello, DOE Employee of the Year.

The DOE team of the year award went to the custodial staff from Waihee elementary school on Maui.
