Isle students sweep national video contest

Hawaii public school students swept the competition in the national 2011 Student Television Network Challenge, taking home first place prizes in all categories – news, sports, and film – in addition to other awards.

Waianae High School’s “Rolling with the Punch Lines,” produced by Jenna Munoz, Michael Gooch, Kahea Hussey, and Caila Westlake, won the High School News Challenge award.

The top High School Sports Challenge prize went to Maui High School’s Allyssa Ferrer, Roselyn Domingo, and Lee Ah Lee, for “Nifo Oti.” Waianae High’s “Taylor’s Goal,” created by Faron Jove, Kahunui Foster, Alicia Keanu, Manola Chankthakham, won third place.

In the High School Film Challenge, Waianae High emerged victorious again with “Compositions of a Mad Scientist,” a special-effects filled short by Kerstye Kau, Shayla Bradley, Alexander Moniz-Vinluan, and DJ Westbrook.

Hawaii also clinched first and second place prizes in the Middle School Challenge. First place went to Waianae Intermediate School’s Crystal Cebedo, Mahealani Nieto-Lopes, Gena Jove, and Tyler Chanthakham for “In Control.” Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School came runner up with “A Teacher’s Life > From the Inside,” by Kailee Nii, Chase Tokita, Mandy Sugihara, and Kaelee Esposo.

Waianae Intermediate also received Honorable Mention in the Middle School Challenge category for “Beyond The Wheelchair,” which was produced by Reycine Silva, Cammie Tootoo, Shealyn Torres, and Trinity Anuhea Dalida.

The STN competition is judged by professionals within the television news industry. Judges score points in the following applicable categories: camera/direction, lighting, audio, natural sound, editing, drama/human interest, storytelling/script writing, creativity, journalistic integrity/courage, acting/talent, and followed directions. Winning entries should meet the following criteria: Excellent content, tells a story; Excellent production values; Strong connection to the topic; Overall impact and professionalism.


STN is a nonprofit organization started in 1999 by a group of dedicated teachers who volunteered their time, energy, and vision.  With hundreds of affiliate public and private schools, STN supports, promotes, and recognizes excellence in scholastic broadcasting, creative video and filmmaking, and media convergence.

Results of the 2011 Student Television Network Challenge were announced on November 22.
