Hawaii's 2011 seniors trended downward in their performance on the College Board SATs.

Hawaii's average scores were 500 in math, 479 in critical reading and 469 in writing.

That was down a total of eight points overall compared to the 2010 graduates.

And that drop in scores is on par with the national average which had test scores falling six points.

I am also a PARENT of four children in the public school system and I agree it is more the parents responsibility than the school. The school only can do so much for the kids. It's up to the parents of these high schoolers to help their kids get as much knowledge as possible and keep track of the homework. Get involved with the school and know their teachers by email if you can't go down to school. Our kids need classrooms not dropping out of school.

As a father of four I can tell you that it is as much the responsibilty of the parents as it is the teachers. I never let my kids speak pidgeon even though I do, and I set a standard of a 3.0 GPA to have freedom in my house. You've got to stay on top of the kids and push them to succeed, otherwise they'll be overwhelmed by society, and aspire to be a MMA fighter like their friends! Teachers can only do so much, the kids have to want to be more than just kids...

I'm not a teacher nor do I have family memebers or friends who teach. With that said I think teachers do need to improve. However, I think that ultimately it is the responsibility of the PARENTS too!! Too many parents throw the responsibilty on just the SCHOOL and Teachers. Also we don't fund education as we should! That is always the first place we cut when times are tight. Our society has become one that takes no accountability and just blames! THAT NEEDS TO CHANGE TO MAKE ANY IMPROVEMENTS!!

These local instructors don't perform unless you light a fire under their tails and keep it there...
