Hawaii Medical Center has officially closed.
Officials say the final patients were transferred late Wednesday to other hospitals and care facilities.
They say a majority of the company's one thousand employees will be laid off this weekend.
Administrators will stay on to handle the final wind down.
State lawmakers say the HMC sites are likely to be acquired and reopened at some point by one of the state's existing operators.
"I would expect at this time next year we'll be eagerly awaiting a planned reopening of HMC, but in the interim people are afraid that they can't get emergency services,” said Sen. Josh Green.
Queen's Medical Center is pursuing transplant center certification.
HMC East had been the state's only transplant center.
