The CEO of Hawaii Medical Center says the company has given layoff notices to more than 200 employees.

The layoffs take effect on Saturday, December 24.

CEO Maria Kostylo says HMC has been working with various bargaining units on the work force reduction process and has been providing unemployment counseling and services through the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

HMC says this will not affect patient care.

Fewer than 60 patients remain at HMC East and HMC West.

Hawaii Medical Center said its two hospitals would close after it failed to find a buyer.

"The closures were announced after the hospitals' former owner and largest secured creditor objected to a potential sale." The AP News story has more detail.
