A new era in sustainability at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

This afternoon Governor Abercrombie, UH Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and "Hoku Solar" CEO Scott Paul flipped the switch on the campus' first photovoltaic system.

The panels were installed on the roof of sinclair library, which was built 55 years ago and has a history of firsts for energy conservation.

"It won awards for its innovative design it utilitzed the tradewinds as its natural air conditioning system so that was recognized as one of the first sustainable buildings," says Virginia Hinshaw, U.H. Manoa chancellor.

The system will save UH a half million dollars over the 25-year life of the system.
