Partnerships can help when it comes to environmental awareness.

A partnership that is beginning to work wonders is aimed at clearing away the trash from our sidewalks.

A short drive around the Moili'ili neighborhood reveals a number of trash piles - mostly items that will not be picked up until the bulky item pickup day arrives.

That became bothersome to Derek Kauanoe and friends who started the "Moili'ili Matters" website.

"On that website, there's been a lot of members who have expressed concerns by posting comments about the garbage dumping that we see in our community.  On average there's about 125 monthly dumpsites,” said Derek Kauanoe of Moiliili Matters.

Kamehameha Schools owns a number of properties in the neighborhood, and decided to team up with Moili'ili Matters.

"We know that it takes more than just one entity, one person working to make a difference and as we look to re-vitalize the properties that we have in Moiliili, we're glad to join up with others in the community that are willing to step forward and make a difference,” said Kekoa Paulsen of Kamehameha Schools.

Paulsen said Kamehameha is putting its muscle where its mouth is.

"We'll be out here when we do the recycling drive in October to actually lift and carry stuff to get it to the recyclers and if we can just work to get the word out that this is happening, we're glad to do that,” said Paulsen.

The key, according to Kauanoe, is letting residents know exactly when the bulky item pickup dates take place.

"We have a list of dates for the rest of the year and thanks to Kamehameha Schools, they helped to send out thousands of post cards to the residents of the area letting them know when bulk pickup is for the rest of the year."

Kauanoe also said there may be a reason why the younger generation is becoming more attuned to the environment.
