This past year, the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative was adopted.

It calls, among other things, for the state to get 70 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources by the year 2030.

Can it be done?

"Absolutely.  I think we can meet that quite easily.  One of the first things that we need to target is efficiency and then the rest is fairly easy,” said Eric Carlson of Revolusun.

If that goal is to be reached, Hawaii will have to count on a variety of renewable energy sources.

"We're so blessed to have all different types of resources for renewable energy.  We've got wave, geothermal, wind and solar obviously.  Each one of them comes with its own challenges,” he said.

Those challenges range from technological to legal.

But the technology for one renewable source has improved rapidly over the years.

"Solar is for most people the easiest thing to get into,” he said.  “Some of the other technologies require large scale buildups where solar can be personalized for a homeowner."

As the cost of oil continues to rise, using photovoltaic systems for homes here becomes more appealing.

"Right now we're at one percent of Hawaii's homeowners have a photovoltaic system, or less than one percent and that number is growing every day and we expect it to grow through the coming years,” he said.

Carlson says up to 65 percent of the cost of a new photovoltaic system may be covered by tax credits.

But suppose you could get one for free?

Just go to our website, www.khon2.com and click on the orange Be Energy Independent Revolusun banner.

But don't wait too long.

"As you know, the deadline is Saturday at midnight and we'll be announcing our winner a week from today."

That winner will receive a $15,000 photovoltaic system.
