Renewable energy and conservation are the topics in tonight's Be Green 2. Conservation is one of the easiest ways to cut your electric bill.
"It starts there - things like turning off the lights when you leave the room, turning off the AC and opening up your window. All these things help to lower your demand,” explained Eric Carlson of Revolusun.
Anytime electricity is used to generate heat, it is going to jack up the electric bill.
If you have room - and your neighbors don't mind - consider drying clothes on a line rather than in a clothes dryer.
"That's a huge part of percentage of a household's demand,” he says. “Depending on how much laundry they do and then another one is heating your water with electricity."
And that is why one in four houses in Hawaii has solar water heaters and panels.
The next step for a homeowner would be photovoltaic panels on the roof.
These don't just heat water, they are virtually electricity producing power plants.
"We like to joke with our homeowners. Think about it and name your power plant on your roof. It's - these things are a clean, non-polluting energy source,” he says.
The technology has improved to the point where the cells do not interfere with a building's architectural profile.
"We have building integrated cells as well. That's part of Revolusun's approach is to work with the homeowner to make sure that we're not putting something somewhere they don't want it to be seen. So it's something we take into consideration when we work with the homeowner,” says Carlson.
And here's the good news - one lucky homeowner is going to win a $15,000 photovoltaic system.
"And depending on the lucky winner's current household demand, we could possibly eliminate their electric bill.”
