Bicyclists could become a very important part of a young student's life. We'll tell you more about that in a moment. First, Greenfleet Hawaii and Sunetric have teamed up to create a scholarship for a high school senior to be announced in July."Sunetric really believes that students in Hawaii are our biggest renewable energy resource," said Laura Poirier. "So that's why we're partnering with Greenfleet Hawaii to make available - it's called the Recycle for Energy scholarship which is a thousand dollars to a high school senior in Hawaii."
Students have until June 30th to submit a 500 word essay on a green future and a panel will pick the winner of the $1,000 scholarship.
"We'll look at a 500 word essay and also a referral from a teacher or someone in the community," said Scott Williams, Greenfleet Hawaii. "So we're going to read through those and see whose vision, who has the vision for the renewable energy and kind of judge it on that."
But Greenfleet is ready to offer more scholarships - - depending on your 'green' contributions.
"And what the program does is ask people to ride their bikes - whether they ride to work or ride to school or recreational-wise, they can go to Greenfleet and log those miles and it calculates the kilowatts that they generate and we convert that into a dollar amount and that's what helps release the funds for a scholarships," Williams explained.
In other words, there could be more than one scholarship, depending on community involvement. And this could be just the beginning of a great partnership among the community, Sunetric and Greenfleet Hawaii.
"You know we just thought it was a great partnership to work with Greenfleet and we really believe in the future of Hawaii and helping to fuel young minds and the fact that it's going to lead to a brighter future for Hawaii tomorrow," said Poirier.
